Amritsar: A man was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) while allegedly attempting to cross the international border fence from the Indian side towards Pakistan in Amritsar district, officials said.
The incident took place on Friday night in the Daoke area under the jurisdiction of the BSF’s Border Outpost (BOP) Daoke. The area falls under the Gharinda police station limits.
According to the BSF, its personnel spotted a suspicious individual approaching the international border fence from the Indian side. The troops reportedly challenged the man and repeatedly warned him to stop. However, he allegedly ignored the warnings and continued moving towards the fence in an attempt to cross over to Pakistan.
The BSF personnel subsequently opened fire, resulting in the man’s death at the spot.
Following the incident, BSF personnel and local police conducted a search of the deceased and the surrounding area. Police sources said that no narcotics, suspicious material or identification documents were recovered from the spot.
The identity and nationality of the deceased have not yet been established. Authorities are investigating how the man reached the sensitive border area and what his motive was for allegedly attempting to cross into Pakistan.
Security agencies remain on high alert along Punjab’s international border in view of previous incidents involving alleged smuggling and infiltration attempts. Security and surveillance have been intensified in the area following the incident.
