Sensation in Chaibasa Following Two Murders: Woman’s Throat Slit; Youth’s Body Found in Dam
Chaibasa: Two separate murder incidents within the jurisdiction of the Toklo Police Station in the West Singhbhum district have created an atmosphere of panic in the area. The first incident occurred in Chitpil village, where a 22-year-old woman was brutally murdered and her body dumped along the banks of the Rayko River; meanwhile, in the second incident, the naked body of an unidentified young man was recovered from the Baghmara Dam. The police are currently engaged in an intensive investigation into both cases.
Seema Mahto (22), a resident of Chitpil village, left her home on Thursday afternoon, stating she was heading to the Jharjhara *Haat* (market). When she failed to return by late evening, her family members grew anxious and began searching for her, but she could not be traced. On Friday afternoon, some villagers spotted a woman’s body lying along the banks of the Rayko River, an discovery that sent shockwaves throughout the entire locality. Upon receiving the information, the Toklo Police Station team rushed to the scene, took custody of the body, and initiated an investigation.
The police’s preliminary examination revealed deep wounds on the woman’s neck, leading to the suspicion that she was murdered by having her throat slit with a sharp-edged weapon. Late in the evening, the body was brought to the police station, where family members identified the deceased as Seema Mahto. Following a post-mortem examination conducted on Saturday at the Chakradharpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, the body was handed over to the family.
The deceased’s father, Vinod Mahto, has accused his daughter’s husband, Ratan Munda, of her murder. He stated that Seema had recently come to stay at her maternal home along with her one-and-a-half-year-old child. On the day of the incident, Seema had spoken to her husband over the phone and had gone to the Jharjhara *Haat* at his behest, after which she went missing. The family alleges that others, in addition to her husband, may also be involved in this murder. The family has demanded that the police conduct an impartial investigation into the matter and ensure the swift arrest of the culprits.
On Saturday, Toklo Police Station In-charge Ankit Kumar stated that a case has been registered based on the statements provided by the family members, and all aspects of the case are being investigated with utmost seriousness. The police are currently analyzing call detail records and mobile location data, as well as interrogating potential suspects. They have given assurances that the entire case will be solved shortly.
Another sensational incident has come to light within the jurisdiction of the same police station, specifically at the Baghmara Dam, where the body of an unidentified young man has been recovered. Reports indicate that the body was found completely unclothed, raising suspicions that evidence may have been deliberately destroyed following the murder. Acting on information provided by locals, the police arrived at the scene, took custody of the body, and sent it for a post-mortem examination.
The police are currently making efforts to identify the deceased and are cross-referencing missing person reports from neighboring police station areas. Additionally, an investigation is underway to determine whether there is any connection between these two incidents.
The continuous occurrence of such incidents has created an atmosphere of fear in the region. Villagers have demanded that the police increase patrolling in the area and take strict action against the perpetrators.
