Jamshedpur: Tata Power and Imperial College London have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to advance energy research, develop new technologies and strengthen cooperation in the energy sector. The partnership will focus on key areas of the energy transition, including research, technical collaboration and knowledge exchange. The collaboration between Tata Power and Imperial College London will focus on improving the efficiency and resilience of electricity grids, energy storage, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), digital energy systems and advanced energy technologies. The two institutions will also explore ways to reduce carbon emissions in industry. Tata Power’s experience in developing and operating large-scale energy infrastructure will be combined with Imperial College London’s research expertise to address practical challenges facing the energy sector. The partnership comes as India and the United Kingdom strengthen bilateral cooperation on clean energy and climate change. Under the India-UK Vision 2035, energy storage and electricity grid transformation have been identified as key areas for bilateral collaboration. The framework also emphasises joint efforts in renewable energy, hydrogen, carbon capture and artificial intelligence. The Net Zero Innovation Partnership offers further opportunities for cooperation in developing climate-friendly technologies and creating new business opportunities. UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said combining Britain’s research capabilities with India’s industrial expertise could bring about significant change. Describing the collaboration as an example of the opportunities emerging from the new trade agreement between the two countries, he said it would help develop cleaner and smarter energy solutions while supporting job creation and economic growth in both countries. Harjinder Kang, His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for South Asia and Britain’s Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, said the partnership between Imperial College London and Tata Power demonstrated the value of bringing British research capabilities together with India’s industrial expertise. He said the collaboration would accelerate the development of next-generation energy technologies, create new business opportunities and promote sustainable development. Dr Praveer Sinha, chief executive officer and managing director of Tata Power, said India’s energy transition had reached a stage where the capacity, resilience and reliability of the electricity system were as important as the expansion of renewable energy. Future electricity grids, energy storage and digital technologies would need to work in closer coordination to meet rapidly changing energy demand. He said the collaboration with Imperial College London would provide an opportunity to advance in-depth research and new ideas aimed at solving real-world industrial challenges. The resulting solutions could support the energy transition in India and contribute to efforts globally. Professor Mary Ryan, vice-provost for research and enterprise at Imperial College London, said Tata Power had extensive experience across a range of energy technologies and the ability to implement solutions on a large scale. She described these capabilities as important for developing cleaner and more resilient energy systems. She said Imperial College London would contribute its research expertise in science, engineering, business, digital technologies and carbon emissions reduction to strengthen the partnership. Both institutions aim to translate research and innovation into practical solutions. The collaboration is expected to support the development of more resilient, reliable and low-carbon energy systems while promoting the exchange of technical knowledge between India and the UK.
