Share Market Review: Positive Signals Sustain Strength Throughout the Week

New Delhi— In the week ending Friday, October 10, India’s stock markets closed on a strong note for the second consecutive week, riding on positive global cues, robust domestic institutional buying, and easing geopolitical tensions.

  • The BSE Sensex gained 1,293.65 points (1.59 %), closing at 82,500.82.

  • The NSE Nifty rose by 391.10 points (1.57 %), finishing at 25,285.35.

What Fueled the Rally?

Several factors fueled the uptrend in the markets:

  • Strong global signals and optimism in international markets

  • Continued buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) and renewed interest from foreign institutional investors (FIIs)

  • Signs of easing geopolitical tensions

  • Positive progress in trade talks with the U.S., which bolstered investor sentiment

Sector-Wise Performance & Top Movers

Large-Cap Index (BSE)

  • The large-cap index ended the week with a 1.40 % gain.

  • Among top gainers were Max Healthcare Institute, Divi’s Laboratories, Polycab India, Eternal, LTIMindtree, HCL Technologies, Swiggy, TCS, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra.

  • Underperformers included Tata Motors, Vaar Energies, Jindal Steel, Siemens Energy India, Hyundai Motor India.

Mid-Cap Index (BSE)

  • The mid-cap index outperformed slightly with a 1.50 % weekly gain.

  • Leading gainers in this segment included Aditya Birla Capital, Sun TV Network, National Aluminum Company, L&T Finance, AG&P Wopak Terminals, Bank of India, Fortis Healthcare.

  • Lagging stocks included Dixon Technologies, Whirlpool India, KPIT Technologies, Hitachi Energy India.

Small-Cap Index (BSE)

  • In contrast, the small-cap index remained flat over the week.

  • Positive performers included Jindal Photo, Indraprastha Medical Corporation, Sky Gold & Diamonds, Indo Thai Securities, Infibeam Avenues, SpiceJet, South Indian Bank, GM Breweries, Stylem Industries, Salzer Electronics, Dreamfolks Services, Indef Manufacturing, Avalon Technologies (gains of 15 % to 41 %).

  • Among losers: Hemisphere Properties India, Lumax Auto Technologies, Shankar Building Products, Poshak, John Cockerill India, VTM, Praveg dropped by 10 % to 22 %.

All Sectors in Green Except Media

Except for the media sector, all major sectoral indices closed the week in green:

  • Nifty Capital Markets & IT indices led with ~5 % gains

  • PSU Bank & Metal indices up ~4 %

  • Healthcare up ~3 %

  • Private Bank ~2.5 %, Realty & Defense ~2.3 %, Consumer Durables ~2 %

  • Media index was the only laggard, ending the week with a ~3 % decline

FIIs & DIIs: Net Buyers

  • After 12 consecutive weeks of selling, foreign institutional investors turned net buyers, investing ₹2,975.53 crore in the week.

  • Domestic institutional investors maintained their buying streak for the 25th straight week, putting in ₹8,391.11 crore during Monday to Friday.
