Wildlife Trafficking Exposed in Sakchi, Over 100 Illegal Parrots Seized
Jamshedpur:
In a major crackdown, the Forest Department on Sunday late evening seized more than 100 illegally trafficked parrots near the Sakchi roundabout. Two wildlife traffickers have been arrested in connection with the case, and proceedings will be initiated against them under Sections 9, 39, 44, 49, and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
A serious case of wildlife trafficking has come to light in the city. Acting on a tip-off, a Forest Department team conducted a raid near Sakchi Golchakkar and intercepted an auto-rickshaw transporting parrots illegally from Kolkata. The trafficked birds were allegedly meant to be sold in Sakchi and nearby areas of Jamshedpur.
During the search, dozens of parrots were recovered from a crate kept inside the auto. The birds were found packed in extremely cramped and inhumane conditions. Two individuals present at the spot were taken into custody, who were directly involved in the illegal trade. During interrogation, the accused confessed that more parrots had been brought from Kolkata and hidden at various locations across the city. Following this revelation, the Forest Department team, along with the accused, launched further raids at suspected hideouts.
Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Saba Alam Ansari confirmed that all the seized parrots were illegally transported from Kolkata, which is a punishable offense under the law. She stated that wildlife trafficking is a serious crime and strict legal action will be taken against all those involved. The rescued parrots have been placed in a safe facility, where their health is being monitored. After completing necessary procedures, efforts will be made to release them back into their natural habitat.
The Forest Department has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to identify and apprehend other members of this trafficking network, ensuring they are brought to justice.
