China Steps Up Military Pressure on Taiwan With New Aircraft Incursions

China Escalates Military Activity Near Taiwan Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Taipei, Taiwan: Military tensions in the Taiwan Strait have surged once again as China intensified its military presence near Taiwan’s air and sea borders. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense reported on Tuesday morning that 18 Chinese military aircraft, seven naval vessels, and two official ships were detected operating near the island.

Of particular concern, six of the aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait—a long-standing unofficial boundary between China and Taiwan—and entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ). In response, Taiwan deployed its own aircraft, naval vessels, and surveillance systems to monitor and issue appropriate warnings.

This marks yet another incident in a string of near-daily provocations. Just a day earlier, Taiwan reported 26 Chinese aircraft and seven naval vessels patrolling the surrounding region. On July 12, 14 aircraft and nine naval vessels were also recorded operating in the vicinity, showing a pattern of sustained Chinese pressure.

Taiwan’s Defense Minister Wellington Koo visited Hualien Air Base to inspect military personnel working on runway repairs, signaling readiness to maintain operational defense infrastructure amid growing threats.

In a separate but potentially related development, reports have emerged that China is conducting seabed mapping operations around Guam—a key U.S. military hub in the Pacific. Analysts believe this may be part of preparations for undersea cable installation or surveillance, raising further strategic concerns for the broader Indo-Pacific region.

China continues to claim Taiwan as a breakaway province, despite strong resistance from Taiwan’s democratically elected government. The island views itself as a sovereign nation, and recent increases in military provocations are seen by experts as part of Beijing’s broader campaign to intimidate and test Taiwan’s defense readiness.

As China’s military activity escalates, both regional allies and global observers are closely monitoring the evolving situation, wary of the risk of miscalculation or unintended conflict.
