Jamshedpur. A significant turn has emerged in the case involving the attack on Mehendi Kumari, the proprietor of the Bajrang Tea Shop located near Jamshedpur High School within the Bistupur police station limits. In this high-profile case, the named accused, Prem Kumar, surrendered on Wednesday before the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Jamshedpur. He surrendered through his counsels, Gaurav Pathak and Saket Suman, following which the court remanded him to judicial custody. It is noteworthy that on the night of April 6, a group of youths created a massive ruckus at the Bajrang Tea Shop. According to eyewitnesses, during the altercation, the accused behaved indecently with the shop proprietor, Mehendi Kumari, and subsequently threw hot tea at her. Mehendi Kumari sustained severe burns in this attack and was immediately admitted to a hospital for medical treatment. In connection with this incident, the victim’s brother, Ankit Kumar, lodged a written complaint at the Bistupur police station; based on this complaint, the police registered an FIR against Abhay Tiwari, Sunny Mishra, Prem Kumar, and other unidentified individuals. However, police action remained sluggish during the initial days following the incident, with only one accused arrested over a period of six days—a delay that fueled growing public discontent. Local residents, political parties, and social organizations subsequently intensified their demands for the arrest of the remaining accused, exerting pressure on the police administration. Amidst these developments, Prem Kumar’s surrender in court is being viewed as a significant breakthrough in the case. The police are now conducting continuous raids in search of the other absconding accused, and it is being asserted that all the accused will be arrested shortly. Meanwhile, the victim, Mehendi Kumari, continues to undergo medical treatment.
