Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid tribute to the great freedom fighter Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary,praising him as a key warrior against British rule.
In a post on X ,PM Modi write,
“Respectful tribute to the great freedom fighter Mangal Pandey on his birth anniversary. He was a leading warrior of the country who challenged the British government. The story of his courage and valor will remain an inspiration for the people of the nation.”
Mangal Pandey was born in Nagwa, Ballia district.He joined the Bengal Army in 1849. In March 1857, he served as a private soldier in the 5th Company of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry. Pandey played a pivotal role in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, which led to the dissolution of the East India Company and the establishment of British rule in India. He died on 8 April 1857. In 1984, India issued a postage stamp honoring him, and his life has inspired various cinematic portrayals.
