Chandigarh: In a deeply tragic incident that has left the nation shocked, Punjab Police have arrested a 26-year-old NRI, Amritpal Singh Dhillon, for allegedly hitting and fatally injuring 114-year-old world-renowned marathon runner Fauja Singh. The accident took place on Monday evening in Beas Pind, the ancestral village of the veteran athlete, located near Jalandhar.

According to reports, Dhillon — who had returned to India from Canada just a week ago — was driving from Bhogpur to Kishangarh when his vehicle struck Fauja Singh, who was walking along the roadside. The collision was so severe that the elderly runner was thrown nearly 5 to 7 feet into the air. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries later that night.

Dhillon fled the scene initially, but police traced and arrested him on Tuesday night. Jalandhar’s SSP, Harvinder Singh Virk, confirmed the arrest and revealed that the Fortuner SUV used in the hit-and-run was recovered Wednesday morning, based on Dhillon’s statement. The vehicle was registered under the name of Varinder Singh from Athouli village, who told police that Dhillon had recently purchased it.

Fauja Singh, hailed globally for running marathons well past the age of 100, had become a symbol of health, resilience, and inspiration. His passing has sparked an outpouring of grief from across the world. His family, including members from Canada and the United Kingdom, are expected to arrive by Thursday, after which the last rites will be performed.

During police interrogation, Dhillon claimed he was returning after selling a mobile phone and didn’t realize he had hit someone. Authorities, however, are treating the incident seriously due to the victim’s age and stature. Dhillon now faces charges under IPC Section 281 (rash and negligent driving) and Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

The case has triggered widespread mourning as well as discussions around road safety and accountability, especially involving returning NRIs driving on Indian roads. Tributes for Fauja Singh continue to pour in online, with fans, sports personalities, and politicians expressing condolences and calling for justice.

As investigations continue, Punjab Police have assured full legal action and are exploring if additional charges could be applicable. The community remembers Fauja Singh not just as an athlete, but as a global ambassador of aging with dignity and strength.
